One condition to re-routing US 21 via Port Royal is the complete re-paving of Ribaut so we have one remaining hammer to get the paving done.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Normally known for mild winters, Savannah is seeing its first snowfall in 14 years.
Snowflakes mixed with rain drifted into the coastal city Friday night. Some heavy flurries were possible as temperatures dropped overnight. Police urged drivers to be extra careful.
The National Weather Service included Savannah in a winter storm warning covering most of Georgia. Forecasters say 1 to 3 inches could fall in the coastal city.
How rare is snow in Savannah? Normally, temperatures in February don’t dip below 41 degrees.
The last snowfall on record in Georgia’s oldest city was two-tenths of an inch in February 1996. It’s been two decades since Savannah had any notable accumulation, with 3.6 inches falling in December 1989.
The snow shouldn’t stick around long. Temperatures in Savannah are forecast to climb into the 40s Saturday.

I am happy to announce that "next week" has come and the letter of intent for the port buyer has been signed-we now know what next week looks like. Patience is the word now as the nitty-gritty details are worked out prior to the closing-you all know how long it takes to close on a house--multiply that by more than 50 acres....Council meeting this Wednesday, 6:30 town hall, please come, always exciting and interesting. Monthly meeting of Historic Port Royal Foundation, Tuesday, 5:30 at Union Church on 11th street. HPRF is beginning a documentary project to video long time PR residents about the past here in PR-please attend this meeting for an update and to see what else they have in the works.....Joe

AAA CAROLINAS NAMES PORT ROYAL A 2009 SOUTH CAROLINA TRAFFIC SAFE COMMUNITY

CHARLOTTE, NC (October 19, 2009) – Lieutenant John Griffith of the Port Royal Police Department accepted the award honoring the efforts of the city and police department on ensuring safe roads for citizens and visitors of Port Royal, SC.

The city and department were recognized for focusing on implementing four way stops in residential neighborhoods. They have also utilized a grant to focus on DUI enforcement in the community. The town has reduced some speed limits and erected larger signs to improve visibility.

“More Americans have died on roads in the Carolinas since 9/11 than died in the attacks in New York and in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq since,” said Dave Parsons, president and CEO of AAA Carolinas.

Traffic safety is a major public health issue for South Carolina, yet swine flu receives more attention than the three to five people that will die on our highways today.

“Making our streets safer is a team effort,” said Parsons. “And South Carolina has several communities that have stepped up to the challenge.”

Mark Keel, of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, and Dave Parsons presented awards to local law enforcement and community representatives at the sixth annual awards luncheon at Seawell’s in Columbia on Thursday, October 15th.

AAA Carolinas’ Foundation for Traffic Safety is a non-profit organization founded by AAA Carolinas and funded by AAA Carolinas’ member contributions that works to promote traffic safety initiatives in North and South Carolina.

Update on The Port...

As you noted in the Gazette today, yesterday the Budget and Control Board appointed the State Ports Authority as the agent to sell the port. This is an interesting event because: the Budget and Control Board was set to take over the sale of the property on Jan 1,2010, there is an active buyer who might close in January, however, the BCB doesn't meet in January so this move helps the matter proceed. However, it also removes ANY time constraints on the signing-this presents a huge problem for Port Royal since the town is losing potential revenue every month that the property remains in the hands of the State. The town is attempting now to add a time limit on this assignment of sales agency to the SPA in an effort to put some incentive on someone to get the deal done--more to come....Joe

The Historic Port Royal Foundation and St. Marks Episcopal Chapel will hold a Christmas Eve service, Dec. 24th at 8:30 PM, in the Union Church, 1004 11th Street, Port Royal. The church will be decorated for Christmas by the Camellia Garden Club.

Mr. Wally Cole will begin the service at 8:30 PM with Remembrances of Port Royal. We will have Carol Singing, and Holy Eucharist with St. Marks Chapel beginning at 9:00 PM, with the Rev. Mr. Roger Smith officiating. St. Marks invites all, regardless of church affiliation, to join in this service.

BEAUFORT COUNTY YMCA”S YOUTH BASKETBALL REGISTRATION NOW!

Port Royal, SC – Winter Youth Basketball league kicks-off at the Wardle Family YMCA and will continue until Friday, December 11^th. The league is open to both boys and girls ages 3-13 and is a great way to not only learn the fundamentals of basketball and sportsmanship, but also to develop a physical activity routine.

The season officially begins the week of January 4^th and ends February 25^th. “Our winter Basketball League at the Wardle Family YMCA exhibits high standards of ethics and sportsmanship while promoting the development of good character,” says Mike Bostwick, CEO, Wardle Family YMCA.

Without the assistance of volunteer coaches, the YCMA could not operate its Sports Leagues. Experience is not always necessary, so do not be discouraged. If you are interested in volunteering, please attend the FREE coaches clinic on Saturday, December 19^th to brush up on basic basketball skills and to learn fun, new ones.

Interested participants can sign-up at the YMCA on 1801 Richmond Avenue in Port Royal. The cost is $40 for YMCA members and $60 for community participants. Scholarship assistance is available to those who qualify.

Republicans attend candidate meet and greet in Port Royal

Two South Carolina Republican gubernatorial candidates and two GOP candidates running for other offices in the 2010 election mingled with Northern Beaufort County residents in Port Royal on Sunday and explained why they believe voters should support them at the polls next year.
Less than 24 hours before the meet-and-greet at Live Oaks Park, U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett was in Washington, D.C., voting against the House health care reform bill that passed 220 to 215.
"I was heart-sick last night," Barrett said before more than 80 people gathered for the event. "It was a sad day for freedom. Coming back today gives me so much hope."
All Republican candidates running for office in 2010 were invited to speak at the event hosted by the Beaufort Area Republican Club. Only two of
five gubernatorial candidates attended.

Q: What do you feel are the 3 most important issues facing Port Royal and how would you approach those issues?

A: Top issue is that the citizens are allowing things to happen without getting involved. PUDs are a concern because if we dont control them, in 10 years, we will be a town of transients. A town is only as good as the citizens are willing to make it. Get involved.

Second, the health of the estuary is critical. We have a very large number of sea life that can thrive here. We must keep it clean.

Finally, we keep saying "the port, the port, the port". We need to have a plan for the town now. I would like to see a public library at the old Butterbeans. Would be wonderful to have an art studio.

Q: How would you attract new business?
A: Incentives. Two year break on taxes. Perhaps a break on rent from the owner of the building. We need to work together to jump start new businesses.

Q: If you could change one thing about the town, what would it be?
A: The apathy. People are tired, and dont want to worry about it. Community involvement is key. Church youth groups may help our citizens clean up yards. We need to change our zoning. Commercial on the main streets, residential on the side streets.

Q: What do you feel is the best attribute you would bring to this job?
A: I raised 4 children, have done a lot of volunteer work, have lots of degrees, been in business for 15 years. But my number one attribute is, that I work well with people.

Q: What three words best describe you?
A: Positive, enthusiastic, and I love life!!!

YMCA OF BEAUFORT COUNTY GIVES PARENTS A “NIGHT OUT”

Port Royal, SC – The YMCA of Beaufort County is offering a unique experience for kids and an inexpensive babysitting opportunity for parents. “Parents Night Out” takes place Friday, November 6th from 6:30pm-10pm and will continue the first Friday of every month moving forward.

Parents can explore the historic town of Beaufort, go to a movie, have dinner or have a quiet evening at home while their children explore and play in a safe and fun environment at the Wardle Family YMCA.

Children will participate in a variety of activities including gym games, crafts, swimming and a movie. The cost is $25 per child and $10 for each additional sibling. The fee includes pizza, popcorn and a beverage. “Parents Night Out” is offered to children 6 months and up. Pre-registration is required the Wednesday before each “Parents Night Out” by calling (843) 522-9622 or by visiting the YMCA front desk.

Marlena Smalls announces the Hallelujah Singers Reunion Concert featuring original singers and new vocalists. More than two dozen voices will join for this unprecedented program with two special performances of plantation melodies and spirituals. The fall program will be presented October 23 and 24 at 7:30 pm at First African Baptist Church at 601 New St. in Beaufort, SC. Open seating is limited beginning at 7 pm. Contributions will be accepted to support the group’s ongoing Fa Da Chillun national education program.

Smalls organized the Hallelujah Singers in 1990 to preserve the melodies and storytelling unique to the South Carolina Sea Islands. She was inducted into the South Carolina Black Hall of Fame in 2004. She is known to international audiences for her role as Bubba’s Mom in the Academy Award winning film Forrest Gump where the Hallelujah Singers also performed.

The ensemble is a national art provider offering cultural enrichment through preserving and celebrating the heritage of the Gullah culture with language and traditions indelibly linked to West African heritage and its influence on the broad musical development.

Smalls travels extensively teaching the Gullah culture and entertaining in schools, auditoriums and festivals as well as for corporate meetings and associations, family reunions and weddings. The Hallelujah Singers have performed for the U. S. Congress, the South Carolina legislature, in Chicago’s Ravinia festivals, the Kennedy Center, the Spoleto Festival and the G-8 Summit.

The group has been designated a Local Legacy of South Carolina by the U. S. Library of Congress as part of the library’s Bicentennial Celebration. Other awards include the South Carolina Folk Heritage Advocacy Award, the Alpha Kappa Community Service Award, the Rockford (Illinois) Mayor’s Award, the Elizabeth O’Neill Verner award (Governor’s award for the arts), and the group was named as the South Carolina Ambassadors of the year in 1998.

Kazoobie Kazoos to hold grand opening on Oct. 13

Kazoobie Kazoos, the United States’ sole plastic kazoo manufacturer, will hold its grand opening at 5 p.m., Oct. 13 at its new world headquarters in the Beaufort Industrial Village.
Kazoobie has been selling kazoos since 1997 and has an extensive line, including the world’s first electric kazoo.
In July, Kazoobie relocated its Tampa, Fla., headquarters to Beaufort. The kazoo assembly and packaging factory's new home is located in the Beaufort Industrial Village The company purchased a 6,500 square-foot building and plans to employ about five people when fully staffed.
"Our company is the last plastic kazoo manufacturer in the USA, and we are very proud to be located right here in Beaufort,” said Stephen Murray, Kazoobie’s president.

PORT ROYAL -- The S.C. State Ports Authority is expecting “within days” to receive an offer for its Port Royal facilities, according to Gene Green, COO of NAI Avant Commercial Real Estate Services, which is listing the property.The offer is expected to come from an experienced South Carolina developer, which Green declined to name. If the SPA were to accept the offer, there still would be numerous steps before a deal could close, including contract negotiations and the securing of financing, Green said.The SPA has been attempting to sell the property for a few years. The Port of Port Royal went back on the market in March 2008 after Port Royal Harbour LLC backed out of a $26 million bid to buy it. The plan was to build a residential community surrounding shops and restaurants on the Beaufort River. In a statement released at the time, the corporation’s principals, David Staley and Scott Schmidt, said the sale collapsed because of the instability of the financial market. Also making headlines around that time was Gov. Mark Sanford’s role in the proposed sale. Critics accused him of inappropriately trying to steer the SPA toward another developer.The port restructuring bill that lawmakers passed into law last session prompts the authority to sell the land by the end of 2009. At the authority’s September board meeting, port officials reported to Sanford that the sale process was moving along and generating interest. The SPA was recently awarded a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a 225-slip boat marina, said SPA spokesman Byron Miller. “That adds significant value to the property, greatly enhancing its attractiveness now and into the future,” Miller said. “It certainly helps the value of the land.” Miller also declined to name any potential buyers. Port of Port Royal Mayor Samuel Murray said it is his understanding that negotiations are underway with a group of people that are interested in the property, as opposed to a single developer. Because plans have looked promising before and then fallen apart, Murray said he is cautiously optimistic that a deal will be finalized. “I don’t jump up and down until I see the signature on the dotted line,” he said.

Port Royal, SC – The YMCA of Beaufort County is offering a unique experience for kids and an inexpensive babysitting opportunity for parents. “Parents Night Out” takes place this Friday on October 2nd from 6:30pm-10pm and will continue the first Friday of every month moving forward.

Parents can explore the historic town of Beaufort, go to a movie, have dinner or have a quiet evening at home while their children explore and play in a safe and fun environment at the Wardle Family YMCA.

Children will participate in a variety of activities including gym games, crafts, swimming and a movie. The cost is $25 per child and $10 for each additional sibling. The fee includes pizza, popcorn and a beverage. “Parents Night Out” is offered to children 6 months and up. PUPPY PLUNGE!!! October 3rd at the YMCA!

The Wardle Family YMCA hosts its second annual Puppy Plunge for dogs and their owners from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 3. Dogs of all breeds and sizes are welcome to take a dip in the outdoor pool.

Admission to the Puppy Plunge is $5 per dog. Dogs must be well behaved, current on all required vaccines and leashed until inside the pool area. Owners must be present at all times and humans are not permitted to swim in the Puppy Plunge.

The Wardle Family YMCA is located at 1801 Richmond Ave. in Port Royal. Puppy plunges are also scheduled for Nov. 7 and Dec. 5.

The Old Village Association is asking for volunteers to help with the 8th Annual Oktoberfest-October 17th from 12 till 5.

The event is on Paris Ave and help is needed from 8 AM--vendor directions and traffic control to the end of the event.

Town election November 3rd--two seats open, four candidates.

First, make sure you and your neighbors are registered--forms are at town hall and must be turned in by Friday October 2nd.

Second, election facts: in November 1976--490 people voted in a special election, the next year, 1977 there were 872 registered voters--327 people voted.

In 2007 there were about 2000 registered voters, and 370 people voted and six votes made a difference.

Third, today there are 2500 registered voters---EVERY vote counts.

5,000 rubber floating shrimp will be dropped into the Beaufort River adjacent to the Waterfront Park. Each shrimp will have a unique number 0001 through 5,000. The shrimp will float naturally with the tide toward a trap at the finish line, possibly directed by boons to keep the shrimp floating on the racecourse. The first 10 shrimp to cross the finish line receive the following cash prizes:

Cheeseburger in Paradise - Saturday, Sept 26!!!

As you may recall, the Friends of Caroline Hospice Annual Fundraiser is happening this Saturday night, Sept. 26th 2009. Last years event was a blast, and I am positive this years will be even better. Tickets are $25 each. You get Beer/Wine/Margaritas and a BPG Burger with all the fixins, plus the knowledge that you are helping a great organization. FYI – you have to buy the tickets in advance – I will make a special trip to wherever you are to deliver the tickets if necessary. We have to let the BPG know how many burgers to cook in advance. With that having been said, if you say you’ll be there, I’ll keep a reserve of tickets with your name on them. Please let me know by the end of today how many tix you will require.

Music will be provided by Worth and myself – this will probably be the highlight of your evening for sure. Also, we will likely get up a game of Bocce on the new grassy knoll by the River below the deck at the BPG. Email me or call me (843.812.3949) so that I can reserve some tix for you.

This Wednesday evening, at town hall, Estuary Week events kick off with a forum on the who, what and why of our estuary system. I am concerned because our system could become a Chesapeake Bay--a dead body of water that will take millions of dollars and many generations to restore. We have an opportunity, by learning and teaching and practicing, to preserve our Port Royal Sound and avoid what others have had to do. I encourage each of you to attend this forum and become activists in this effort--6:00, town hall, Port Royal, September 23rd.

Light refreshments will be served beginning at 6 with some of our creatures on display.The roughly 45 min. presentation begins at 6:30 and includes information on a broad range of topics to include what estuaries are, how they function, their importance, why ours is unique, the food web, the tides, estuarine creatures and their lifecycles, human impact and more. October 8th: A BIG Day in Our Little Town!

It is not very often that we have such an exciting evening in Port Royal. October 8th will be full of fun for everyone.

First, at 5:30 the Old Village Association is hosting a Business After Hours event for the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce-this is a monthly event to enable Chamber members to network and socialize. For non-Chamber members, this is a $20 per person event, for Chamber members, it is $10 per person--here is the trick, it is an oyster roast with all you can eat and drink oysters etc. The event goes from 5:50 till 7PM at Live Oak Park--you must email the Chamber to make sure there are enough fixins--Blakely Williams mailto:blakely@beaufortsc.org. There will be door prizes and other goodies at this event.

Since we have all the networking types in Port Royal, we are also hosting, for the first time in this area--Pecha Kucha--we will be walking down Paris Ave to The Shed at 7 PM for a FREE event; the first event at The Shed in years. PK is sponsored by the Creative Cluster of New Carolina and put on locally by Ian Leslie and Holly Davidson along with a bunch of other folks. PK is Chinese for Sound of Chatter--a semi-formal group of presentations by "artists" who describe their passion--for example: Cotter Ramsey of Allison-Ramsey, Iron Fish, Plums, and the Storyteller from Habersham. Each presenter is given 6 min and 40 seconds to show up to 20 slides, there will be a total of 11 presentations on this first of it;s kind event.
